Originally from Wales, UK, Emyr is a music teacher, author, pianist and electric guitarist with over a decade of teaching experience in England and Western Canada. After receiving a scholarship to study Music at Cardiff University in 2009, he completed a Master’s degree in Music Performance at the University of Oxford in 2013.
Since moving to Vancouver in 2016, Emyr’s students have earned numerous accolades, including first-place awards at the International Crescendo Competition and Gold Medals at the Steinway Competition.
Having started piano relatively late himself, Emyr experienced technical challenges and playing-related injuries during his undergraduate studies. Overcoming these difficulties shaped his teaching philosophy, centred on developing healthy, relaxed technique from the outset. He works with students of all levels to build strong technical foundations, helping them progress confidently towards advanced repertoire. His own experience also informs his patient and supportive approach to beginners.
In 2023, Emyr authored a beginner piano method inspired by Eastern European piano pedagogy, featuring original compositions designed to engage young learners. Revised in 2026 with additional compositions, the programme has helped students progress towards RCM Level 1 while moving beyond the limitations of conventional beginner methods.
Emyr teaches from his peaceful home studio in Anmore, BC, featuring an Essex grand piano. He is a member of the BC Registered Music Teachers’ Association and is RCM-certified. In 2026, he received the Distinguished Teacher Award at the Pacific Rim International Music Competition.
